In wayfaring … one follows a path that one has previously travelled in the company of others, or in their
footsteps, reconstructing the itinerary as one goes along. Only upon reaching his destination, in this case,
can the traveller truly be said to have found his way.
(Ingold 2016: 16)
Wayfaring is an exhibition project involving four artists who come together at different points in their
practice to explore notions of materiality, memory and place through iterative methods of object-making.
The process-oriented, developmental approach of the project is likened to a ‘meandering line’ (Ingold 2016:
172) in which the ‘way is the goal, not the destination’ (Pogossian 2016: 130). Guiding the process is the
objective to develop new work for exhibition through the lens of contemporary jewellery by considering
intimacies of scale, material sensitivity, technical skill, and issues of commemoration, sentimentality and
body-object relationships. Jewellery is a key language however, the artists are encouraged to consider the
idea of jewellery in the broadest sense with the issue of wearability not essential.
