Interplay is an investigation into the design of forms engaged with through play.
I consider play to be an intrinsically motivating activity engaged in for relaxation and enjoyment that also results value beyond the activity itself. A play object may sit in an intermediate zone between the domains of toys, sculptural objects and furniture. These objects engage the senses, evoke curiosity, invite a reciprocal relationship, and become transformed through use.
The octagonal components are developed from a torus, each piece has two flat sides, allowing for their use as seating, and six curved sides. These pieces can interconnect to form undulating shapes that snake across the floor or stack to develop pillars and arches.
Integral to my practice is an iterative process of discovery and refinement, through the use of computer-assisted design and manufacturing techniques, that is mediated by material investigation and a hand-making process. I choose to push material beyond the typical form into graceful curves, the simplicity of which belies the force required to bend them to my will. This strategy has lead to an investigation of dynamic forms comprised of elements that can be manipulated, reconfigured and transformed, which engage creative thinking and blur the distinctions between user and creator.
